Quality and Value of Traded Goods
TMA is taking a systemic approach to improve the safety, quality and value of goods traded internationally within EAC and beyond by promoting in-country quality standards, harmonising legal frameworks with other countries, providing hardware for quality labs, easing border procedures at OSBP facilities and supporting businesses to comply through:
- Over USD20million invested in Standards and SPS initiatives across East Africa and the Horn since 2017
- TMA is strengthening Sanitary and Phytosanitary frameworks (for safety of food and agricultural products) aligning with international protocols (such as WTO and EAC) to boost intra-EAC trade and exports to the rest of the world, by enhancing conformity with global market requirements
- Support to EAC countries in simplifying and harmonising standards by accrediting designated labs in partner countries and adopting harmonised formats of certification for mutual recognition
- Interventions have enhanced efficiency in compliance by reducing the average time and cost that it requires for assessment, certification and inspection
