Physical Connectivity

TMA is tackling one of the most pressing challenges to the region’s trade: high transport costs and extended times due to network congestion and inefficiencies by addressing logistical barriers across key corridors, leading to:

  • 25% reduction in overall travel times and a 40% reduction in transport and clearance costs in Somaliland with the Hargeisa Bypass
  • Upgrade of border infrastructure at the Goli/Mahagi and Nimule/Elegu OSBPs addressed systemic issues like theft, harassment, and corruption, which disproportionately affect small-scale traders and women
  • Increased revenues for cross-border traders – 30% increase in monthly trade volumes due to increased market access with Goli-Mahagi OSBP seeing trade volumes double between 2019 and 2022, while Nimule/Elegu had a 32% increase in trade transactions between 2021 and 2023
  • Socio-economic benefits and empowerment for women and cross-border traders through significant increases in trade flows and commerce with Hargeisa Bypass facilitating a 44% growth in Somaliland’s livestock exports
